Physics
Physics is the science of how things work. Major topics
include motion in one and two dimensions, forces, energy, simple machines,
light, sound, and electricity. Students will investigate physics through labs and
simulations. Mathematics is the tool that is utilized to model and help explain
the concepts of physics. A strong mathematical background is essential to
student success.

Tests (30%)
Upon the completion of each unit
there will be an exam. Students may use all of the notes and assignments for
each exam. Quizzes can be given at any time.
Homework (30%)
Depending on what took place in
class during the day there may or may not be an assignment. Class time will be
provided for students to get started but they will probably need to finish
these at home.
It would be difficult for me to over emphasize the importance of completing daily assignments. The only way that a student can learn physics is by practicing.
Homework is expected to be completed each day prior to the start of class. Not all assignments will be collected and rigorously scored, but rather will be scored on effort and completion. Students should have homework on their desk when class starts. They also need to have a pen or pencil of a different color than they used for their assignment. As we go through the assignment the student needs to make all corrections and complete and problems they did not finish.
Homework is scored as follows
We use a 4-point scale for homework
4 completed,
shows all work and diagrams if appropriate
3 mostly completed, maybe missing
some explanations or work
2 partially completed, maybe
missing some explanations or work
1 very little attempted or no
work and/or explanation shown
0 minimal attempted or didn't do
Participation (10%)
It is critical that students take part in all activities and use the provided class time completely. In order to do this, students must be present, on time, prepared, and on task. At the beginning of each week each student is awarded five points per day or 25 points for a typical week. Unless they draw negative attention to themselves they will not lose any points.
Labs (30%)
Labs and simulations will allow
students the opportunity to test various conjectures. Care must be taken while
collecting data so that the resulting analysis will be valid. All labs are
required by all students so attendance is critical. Since groups are working
together on a lab being absent means that they will have to work alone.
